September Sweeps

30 Sep

Sincerely Kate is more than just the name my blog, but it’s also the name of a Facebook group I created for me and my pen pals. To boost activity in the other SK I decided to have a raffle; all September long my pen pals earned entries in the drawing by participating in an assortment of games such as “Would You Rather” and for all you Whose Line is it Anyway fans, “Questions Only,” and of course by sending me letters. Well, the time for the drawing is among us!

But first, for those of you who are curious, I kept track of the entries via a color-coded calendar, and then this morning I filled out cards for each person however many times they showed up on the calendar and threw ’em into a jug.

And the name on the card I drew is…

retired

Congratulations, Allison! You will be getting the set of gel pens (shown below) in the mail as soon as I get around to ordering it for you via The Lakeside Collection. I expect you to use ’em when you write me next, haha. I guess those 16 entries came in handy, eh?

52-Pc. Gel Pens with Case.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who entered the drawing one way or another. Who knows, maybe I’ll have another raffle in the not so distant future 🙂

Sincerely, Kate ~!~

The Notebook of an Obsessive Compulsive Pen Pal

20 Sep

I collect notebooks. And for virtually NO reason. I often love the cover so much that I don’t want to fill the interior with just anything. For example, I have a Wizard of Oz journal that will probably never be used unless I myself am not in Kansas anymore if you know what I mean. Yes, I have a collection of notebooks that seem to have been bought in vain. That is, with one exception.

I have a pink and white, spiral bound notebook that I use almost every day, a notebook I simply call my OCD Book.

The OCD Book in all its glory

It’s where I keep addresses and where I document which days I receive letters.

I even keep track of the stationery I use.

But wait, there’s more! In the past I’ve kept track of birthdays and listed ideas of presents to send; I also wrote down questions I wanted to ask each month like “What’s your favorite thing about your mom?” in May and “Would you rather be buried alive or stretched to death?” in October. My most recent contribution is a page where I put one of each of my old address labels once the boys and I moved from Reese to Fairgrove.

Is this all necessary? Probably not. Will I keep using this notebook? Absotively Posilutely. If only I could be this organized with other aspects of my life…

The Birth of a Pen Pal

10 Sep

I’ve been toying with the idea of writing a blog for a while now, but much like with my idea to write a best-selling novel, I’m not all that sure what I should write about. We’ve all heard the expression “write what you know” and anyone who knows me knows I’m obsessed with pen palling.

In high school I was always praised for my writing. My senior year was full of papers for English IV, Advanced Writing, Advanced Communications, and Forensics/Drama. While most students would grumble, I wrote my heart out, finding the silver lining in every assignment (and finding myself with the English award- WOOT!). I made a simple rice krispie treat tutorial snap, crackle, and pop; I got an A on a paper a page shy of the required length because what I did write did Henry VIII justice; I even wrote a short story where someone was nailed with a frying pan long before Tangled made it cool. I didn’t have any immediate plans for college when I graduated so come August I was really missing writing- I’m not ashamed to admit it.

At the time Myspace was the place to be so I decided to search for pen pal groups so the writing assignments would come to me. Once I found a couple groups I began looking for 50 pen pals, one from every state. While I might not have ever found 50 people to write to, I did find a bunch and from that moment on pen palling has been my favorite hobby. A perfect fit for the girl who has always excelled in writing.

I’m hoping writing this blog will become a treasured pastime as well and I’ll strive to post on the 10th, 20th, and 30th of every month. More than anything though, I hope my readers (like you!) enjoy this blog.

Sincerely, Kate ~!~
